Who does SHINE help?
- Children between 2 years and 14 years of age (students up to 18 years will be considered)
- An IQ in the normal range (70 and above)
- No known major hearing or vision difficulties

What does it cost?
Shine’s programs come at little or no cost to parents of children with diagnosed learning difficulties. Funding comes from philanthropic sources and donations from parents and families.
What typical behaviour might a child with a language-learning disability display?
- May have a poor time concept
- May have social problems (poor turn taking, does not make or keep friends easily)
- May use inappropriate conversation (poor topic maintenance, off target responses, problems with conversational repairs)
- Often does not participate in group activities
- Does not ask questions
- Does not comprehend jokes
- Does not convey messages clearly
- Uses of immature grammatical structure (omit grammar, words, problems with pronouns, tense, etc)
- Storytelling is vague, lacks specificity and cohesion
- Has poor reading skills (especially reading aloud)
- Has problems with phonemic awareness or phonological awareness
- Has difficulty extracting information from books (problems with meaning)
- Cannot sound out words or predict text
- May have poor self concept, low self-esteem
- May have problems with understanding subtle social rules
- Unable to pronounce some sounds or words
